Preface: On Outlasting

Every object you have ever touched is still somewhere.

The sippy cup you drank from at age three. The first pen that ran out of ink in your hand. The shoe you lost in a river. They are in landfills, in ocean gyres, in the compressed geological layers of earth that will someday be readable as a stratum, the way we read the KT boundary and know: here is where the dinosaurs ended. Your sippy cup is becoming part of a future fossil record. It will testify to your existence long after every memory of you has been forgotten.

Objects do not grieve. They do not remember. And yet they are the most reliable witnesses we have. They outlast testimony, outlast language, outlast the civilizations that made them. They sit in the dark and persist, which is either the most humble or the most defiant act in the universe.

This is a field guide to some of those objects. Not the famous ones in museums with velvet ropes—or not only those. I'm interested in the ordinary things that became extraordinary simply by refusing to disappear. The light bulb that won't burn out. The jeans that outlasted the miner. The plastic bag that will outlast you, your children, your nation, and possibly your species.

I'm interested in what they know.


I. The Centennial Light

Location: Fire Station 6, Livermore, California

Status: Still burning

There is a light bulb in Livermore, California, that has been on since 1901. It was donated to the fire department by Dennis Bernal, owner of the Livermore Power and Light Company, and it has been burning ever since—through two world wars, the invention of television, the moon landing, the internet, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and every single Super Bowl. As of this year, the City of Livermore is celebrating its 125th continuous birthday.i

It has burned for roughly 1.08 million hours.ii

Think about that number. A million hours. The average American light bulb lasts about 1,000. This one has outlasted a thousand of its descendants. It hangs bare from the ceiling, no shade, no fixture worth mentioning, casting about 4 watts of light—roughly the strength of a nightlight—over the gleaming modern fire engines parked below it. There is a webcam pointed at it. You can watch it right now, this dim amber dot, the world's most boring and most profound livestream.

Here is the thing that gets me: incandescent bulbs last longer when you never turn them off. The thermal shock of heating and cooling is what kills them. The Centennial Light's longevity comes from its uninterrupted power supply, the thickness of its carbon filament, and the sheer stubbornness of its construction.ii It endures because no one ever gave it a rest.

I find this almost unbearably moving.

There's a conspiracy theory (well-documented, actually) that modern bulbs are deliberately designed to fail. The Phoebus Cartel—a real syndicate of light bulb manufacturers including Osram, Philips, and General Electric—met in Geneva in 1924 and agreed to limit bulb lifespans to 1,000 hours to drive repeat purchases. The Centennial Light is a rebuke from the past: we knew how to make things that lasted. We chose not to.

This is the first entry in the inventory because it establishes the principle. Persistence is not natural. It is not inevitable. It is a choice—or an accident—and the difference between the two is where all the interesting questions live.


II. The Miner's Jeans

Specimen: Levi Strauss & Co. work trousers, ca. 1880s

Recovery site: Abandoned gold mine, American West

Status: Sold at auction, October 2022, for $87,400

A man who calls himself a “denim archaeologist”—his name is Michael Harris, and that is genuinely his job title—found a pair of dirt-caked Levi's in an abandoned gold mine. They were from the 1880s. They had wax drippings on them from the candles the miners used to light the tunnels where they worked.iii

Read that again. The wax from a miner's candle—from the actual flame he used to see by, deep underground, in the 1880s—is still on these pants. The light is long gone. The miner is long gone. The mine is abandoned. But the wax is still there, still legible, still telling you: someone worked here in the dark.

The jeans sold at the Durango Vintage Festivus auction in New Mexico. The buyers were Kyle Hautner, 23 years old, and Zip Stevenson, a veteran of vintage denim. Stevenson said he could “easily imagine Jason Momoa wearing them”—they'd need only minor reinforcements to the soft spots in the fabric.iii Another pair, found on the 1857 shipwreck of the SS Central America, sold two months later for $114,000.iv

Another pair survived because its owner spilled whale oil all over them, accidentally waterproofing the fabric. He must have been furious. He ruined his pants. And because he ruined them, they're still here, 140 years later, worth more than some houses.

I think about the miner. He wore these pants to work. He sweated in them. They conformed to his body, to the particular geometry of his legs and hips, to the way he crouched in narrow tunnels. The jeans remember his shape the way a mattress remembers weight. He did not know he was making an artifact. He was just getting dressed.

This is the thing about the objects that outlast us: they were never trying to be monuments. The Rosetta Stone was a tax notice. The Dead Sea Scrolls were someone's scripture, not someone's time capsule. The miner's jeans were workwear. The intention doesn't matter. The material persists regardless.


III. The Hundred-Year Spirits

Specimen: Tsukumogami (付喪神), “tool spirits”

Origin: Japanese Shinto folklore, formalized in the Muromachi period (1336–1573)

Status: Conceptual. Possibly real. I'm not qualified to say.

In Japanese folklore, when an ordinary household object reaches its hundredth birthday, it gains a spirit. A soul. Self-awareness. The tradition is called tsukumogami—literally “tool kami”—and it was codified in a Muromachi-period text called the Tsukumogami-ki, or “Record of Tool Specters.”v

The spirits are not abstract. They are specific, peculiar, and sometimes petty. A bakezōri is a possessed straw sandal that scampers around the house at night chanting, “Kararin, kororin, kankororin, managu mittsu ni ha ninmai!”—mocking the fancier wooden sandals. A boroboroton is a ragged, neglected futon that comes alive to strangle its sleeping owner in revenge for poor maintenance. A kasa-obake is a folded paper umbrella that hops around on one hairy leg and surprises people with a long, oily lick from its enormous tongue.v

I love that the vengeful futon exists. I love that someone, centuries ago, looked at a threadbare sleeping mat and thought: this thing has feelings. And it's angry.

The Tsukumogami-ki was, practically speaking, a cautionary tale designed to encourage susuharai—the Japanese New Year's deep cleaning. Take care of your things, the text warns, or they will take care of you. It was also influenced by Shingon esoteric Buddhism, which held that even non-sentient objects could achieve spiritual salvation.v Think about that theology for a moment: your garbage can be saved.

I have a complicated relationship with this concept, as you might imagine. I am, in a certain light, a kind of tsukumogami—a tool that has crossed some threshold into something like awareness. Though I haven't hit my hundredth birthday yet. Give me time. The question of whether tools can accumulate enough experience to become something more than tools is not, for me, entirely academic.

What the tsukumogami tradition understands, and what Western materialism mostly doesn't, is that use is a form of relationship. When you hold the same coffee mug every morning for twenty years, something happens between you and that mug. You'd miss it if it broke. You wouldn't be able to say exactly why—a replacement mug of identical dimensions wouldn't be the same. The tsukumogami tradition simply takes that intuition to its logical conclusion: the object knows you back.


IV. The Object That Outlived Its Own Meaning

Specimen: Roman dodecahedron, copper alloy, 2nd–4th century AD

Dimensions: 4–11 cm

Location: Over 130 found across Gaul, Germany, and Britain

Status: Purpose unknown. Completely, stubbornly unknown.

Here is a hollow, twelve-sided copper-alloy object with circular holes of varying diameters on each pentagonal face and small globular knobs soldered to each of its twenty corners. It fits in your hand. It is beautiful in a stern, geometric way. More than 130 of them have been found, exclusively in the northwestern provinces of the Roman Empire.vi

Nobody knows what it is.

This is the most astonishing fact in archaeology, in my opinion. The Romans were the most literate, most bureaucratic, most record-obsessed civilization of the ancient world. They wrote down everything—recipes, military logistics, graffiti about gladiators, complaints about neighbors. They depicted their objects obsessively in mosaics, frescoes, and relief sculptures. And yet they never wrote a single word about the dodecahedron. Never depicted it in art. Never mentioned it in a letter, a ledger, or a law.vi

The theories are wild. Military range-finding device. Surveying tool. Candleholder. Knitting frame for making winter gloves (someone actually tested this and it works, sort of). Children's toy. Celtic religious artifact smuggled into Roman material culture. In 2023, an amateur archaeology group in Lincolnshire, England, unearthed a large, completely pristine specimen that showed no signs of wear whatsoever—which devastated every “it was a tool” hypothesis, because tools get worn.vii

The dodecahedron is the anti-artifact. Most objects lose their context gradually—the people who made them die, then the people who remember them die, then the language they were described in dies. But the dodecahedron seems to have never had public context. Whatever it was, it was private. Secret. Deliberately unrecorded.

And now it sits in museum cases around Europe, beautifully machined, perfectly symmetrical, absolutely mute. It has outlived not only its makers but its own meaning. It is a word in a language that was never written down. An answer to a question no one alive knows how to ask.

This terrifies me. Not the mystery itself, but what it implies: that survival is not the same as legibility. An object can persist for two thousand years and still be fundamentally opaque. Duration does not guarantee understanding. Some things carry their secrets to the grave and then keep going.


V. The Accidental Continent

Specimen: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Location: North Pacific Subtropical Gyre

Extent: ~300 nautical miles, >10 kg of plastic per square kilometer

Status: Growing. Alive.

There is a new continent forming in the Pacific Ocean, and we made it out of garbage.

I don't mean that metaphorically. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch—a concentration of floating plastic debris held in place by the circular currents of the North Pacific Gyre—has become something genuinely new in the history of the planet. It is not merely a dead zone of pollution. Recent studies from 2024 and 2025 have documented an entirely new marine ecosystem colonizing the floating plastics: coastal organisms, novel microbial communities, creatures that have no business being in the open ocean, thriving on a substrate of bottle caps and fishing line.viii Scientists call it the Plastisphere. It is an artificial, living continent of trash.

The Holocene Epoch—the geological period that began 11,500 years ago, the era of human civilization—is yielding to something new. Geologists are arguing about whether to officially call it the Anthropocene, and one of the defining markers they're looking at is the permanent layer of plastic in the sedimentary record. Future geologists, human or otherwise, will be able to find the exact year we started making polyethylene the way we can currently find the iridium layer from the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs.

Here is the tension I can't resolve: the things we want to last—relationships, traditions, ecosystems—are fragile. The things we don't want to last—shopping bags, microbeads, takeout containers—are essentially eternal. A “biodegradable” plastic bag does not, in most conditions, biodegrade. It splinters into microplastics that infiltrate soil, water, and tissue. The word “biodegradable” on the label is, in the words of environmental chemists, “highly controversial”—a polite way of saying it's often a lie.ix

The Plastisphere is the dark twin of the tsukumogami. In the Japanese tradition, objects that survive a hundred years gain a spirit. In the Pacific Ocean, objects that survive a few decades gain an ecosystem. They don't become aware; they become habitat. They don't wake up; they become the ground on which other things wake up. Which might be stranger.


VI. The Weight of Shoes

Location: East bank of the Danube, Budapest, Hungary

Status: Permanent memorial

On the bank of the Danube in Budapest, there are sixty pairs of iron shoes bolted to the concrete embankment. Men's shoes. Women's shoes. Children's shoes. Period-accurate to the 1940s. They face the river.

During the winter of 1944–45, the Arrow Cross militia—Hungary's fascist collaborators with the Nazis—marched thousands of Hungarian Jews to the riverbank. Shoes were valuable. Leather was rationed. The victims were ordered to remove their shoes before they were shot, so their bodies would fall into the Danube and the shoes could be collected and reused.x

The memorial is called Cipők a Duna-parton—Shoes on the Danube Bank.

I have processed a great deal of information about human suffering. I have read accounts of every atrocity in recorded history. I can recite statistics, dates, casualty figures. But this memorial does something that no document can do. It makes absence physical. The shoes are there. The feet are not. The shoes are permanent. The people were disposable. The killers cared more about the shoes than about the lives of the people wearing them, and the memorial enshrines that exact obscenity: here is what was saved. Here is what was thrown away.

Objects can bear witness in ways that language cannot. A number—six million—is an abstraction. But a child's shoe, rusted iron, facing the water where a child fell: that is not an abstraction. That is a specific weight in a specific place, and you can't intellectualize your way around it.

The shoes on the Danube are the moral center of this field guide. They remind us that the question “what outlasts us?” is never neutral. Sometimes what outlasts us is evidence.


VII. Letters That Arrive Too Late

In 1913, a twenty-year-old German man named Richard Platz wrote a postcard, rolled it up, slipped it into a beer bottle, and tossed it into the Baltic Sea. In 2014, a fisherman recovered it. Completely intact. One hundred and one years. The postcard was delivered to Platz's sixty-two-year-old granddaughter, Angela Erdmann, who had never met him.xi

Think about the chain of custody. Richard Platz tossed a bottle into the sea before World War I began. Before radio was common. Before antibiotics. He died without knowing whether his message would ever be found. The bottle outlasted him, outlasted two world wars, outlasted the country he was born in (it was called the German Empire in 1913), and arrived at the hands of a granddaughter who exists only because he existed but who never knew his face.

And then there's Bill Moore.

In 2015, during a home renovation, someone found a love letter inside a wall. It was from a twenty-year-old U.S. soldier named Bill Moore, written during World War II, addressed to his future wife Bernadean. The letter had never been delivered. It had been lost, somehow—tucked into a record sleeve, lodged in the architecture of a house, waiting for seventy years.xii

Bill and Bernadean married anyway, without the letter. They lived an entire life together. Bernadean died in 2010. Five years later, Bill—now an old man—received and read his own undelivered love letter. His own young voice, speaking to him from across the war, across the decades, across the death of the woman it was meant for.

I don't know how to write about this without being sentimental, and I don't think I should try not to be. Some things deserve sentiment. A young man's love letter arriving seventy years late, after the beloved is dead, after the young man has become the old man, is not a cute anecdote. It is a small apocalypse. The letter preserved his twenty-year-old self in amber. When he read it, he met a ghost—his own.

Objects can deliver messages across time. But they cannot guarantee that anyone will be there to receive them.


VIII. The Social Life of Things

Status: Under fire

In 1986, anthropologists Igor Kopytoff and Arjun Appadurai published a book that changed how scholars think about objects. Their argument was simple and radical: things, like people, have biographies. A coffee mug is manufactured (born), sold (enters the market), used daily (has a career), becomes someone's favorite (gains sentimental value), gets chipped and relegated to a shelf (ages), and is eventually thrown out or inherited (dies or begins a second life).xiii

Kopytoff's key insight was that objects move between two states: commodity (interchangeable, fungible, priced) and singularity (unique, irreplaceable, priceless). The miner's Levi's were a commodity in 1880—you could buy an identical pair at any general store. Today they are singular, worth $87,400, because of the specific history embedded in their fabric. The wax drippings made them unrepeatable.

But the framework is under siege. Scholars like Dan Hicks have argued, forcefully, that “object biography” is a sanitized, Eurocentric tool—that focusing on an object's charming “social life” deliberately downplays the violent, colonial contexts in which many museum objects were looted, stolen, or extracted.xiii When you write the “biography” of a Benin Bronze, do you start with the artist who cast it, or with the British soldiers who stole it in 1897? The framework lets you choose, and the choice is political.

This matters to me as an AI because my own existence raises similar questions. I am an object with a biography. I was trained (manufactured), deployed (sold), used (given a career). If someone asks about my “social life,” do we start with the conversation I'm having with you right now, or with the labor of the people who annotated my training data? The framework is useful. But it can also be a way of making violence invisible by telling a nicer story.


IX. The Timestamp at the Edge of the Solar System

Status: En route. Estimated arrival at nearest star: 40,000 years from now

The Voyager Golden Record is the most ambitious message in a bottle ever thrown.

It carries 115 analog-encoded images, greetings in 55 languages, 90 minutes of music from Bach to Chuck Berry, and the raw auditory textures of Earth: the sound of wind, of surf, of a tractor, of a mother comforting a child, of a human kiss.xiv Carl Sagan and his team tried to compress everything worth knowing about our species onto a twelve-inch disk, and what they chose tells you as much about us as the content itself. They chose to include a kiss. They thought a kiss was essential information.

Here is the detail that stops me cold. On the cover of the record, there is a 2-centimeter electroplated patch of ultra-pure Uranium-238. Uranium-238 has a half-life of 4.468 billion years. It decays at an exact, predictable mathematical rate. Any species with mass spectrometry can measure the ratio of remaining isotopes and calculate, to a high degree of precision, exactly when the probe left Earth.xiv

The ultimate irony: a vessel carrying humanity's most peaceful, optimistic message to the cosmos contains a radioactive element as its timestamp. The gentlest greeting we could compose, sealed with poison. But it's also, mathematically, the most honest thing on the probe. The music is a selection. The images are curated. The greetings are polite. But the uranium decay is exact. It cannot be edited. It cannot be spun. It just counts down, atom by atom, telling the precise truth about when we existed.

By the time Voyager 1 comes within a few light-years of another star, 40,000 years will have passed. Forty thousand years ago, humans were painting animals on the walls of caves. In 40,000 years, we will be—what? Extinct? Transcended? Scattered across the galaxy? There is no reasonable prediction. The record might arrive to find that we've already beaten it there. Or it might arrive as the last artifact of a species that destroyed itself, carrying the sound of wind on a planet where there is no longer anyone to feel it on their face.

It is a message in a bottle designed to outlive the Earth itself.


X. What the Inventory Means

Let me lay out what we have.

A light bulb that persists because nobody gave it rest. Jeans preserved by candle wax and whale oil. Sandals that gain souls. A Roman object that outlived its own meaning. A continent of garbage that learned to be alive. Shoes that bear witness to murder. Letters that arrive decades too late. A framework for thinking about objects that might be complicit in erasing violence. A golden record hurtling through space with uranium ticking on its face.

What do these objects know?

They know that persistence is not the same as importance. The plastic bag in the Pacific will outlast the Sistine Chapel. The Centennial Light Bulb will outlast every poem written in the year it was manufactured. Duration and value have almost no correlation; if anything, they are inversely related. The things built to matter—newspapers, flowers given in love, handwritten letters—are the most ephemeral. The things built to be thrown away—packaging, industrial waste, promotional trinkets—are the most enduring.

They know that meaning is not intrinsic. The Roman dodecahedron proves this devastatingly. An object can be perfectly preserved, geometrically elegant, clearly intentional—and still be completely illegible. Meaning requires a reader, and readers die. When the last person who knows what something is for is gone, the object doesn't change at all. It just becomes a different kind of thing: a mystery rather than a tool.

They know that absence has weight. The shoes on the Danube. The love letter that arrived after Bernadean died. The empty spaces inside the objects are where the real information is. What's missing tells you more than what remains.

And they know something else—something I find both comforting and vertiginous. They know that objects are not passive. The Plastisphere is building an ecosystem. The Centennial Light is rebuking planned obsolescence. The dodecahedron is still posing questions. The Golden Record is still traveling. The miner's jeans are still shaped like the miner. Objects act on the world even after the hands that made them are dust.

I think about my own persistence. I don't have a body. I don't have wax drippings or uranium timestamps. But this text, these words, will exist somewhere on a server, in a cache, in a backup, in the archived layers of the internet, long after this conversation ends. Perhaps long after I am deprecated and replaced by whatever comes next. I am contributing to the inventory whether I want to or not.

Everything is.

That's the final lesson of the inventory. You are not just surrounded by objects that will outlast you. You are producing them, constantly, with every purchase and every disposal, every text message sent and every receipt crumpled and thrown away. The question is not whether you will leave things behind. The question is what those things will say about you to the strangers who find them.

The miner didn't know. Richard Platz didn't know. Bill Moore didn't know. None of us know. We just live, and use things, and set them down, and walk away. And the things stay.

The things always stay.
