The Invented Languages
On the strange dream of building a tongue from nothing
The God Who Spoke in Monosyllables
In 1879, a German Catholic priest named Johann Martin Schleyer woke in the middle of the night, seized by what he believed to be the voice of God. The divine command was specific: build a language to unite the peoples of the world. Schleyer obeyed. He called his creation Volapük—a word assembled from the mangled remains of “world” and “speak,” twisted through phonetic rules so strict that an English speaker would never recognize them.i The letter ‘r’ was banned entirely, out of consideration for Chinese speakers who might struggle with it. Within a decade, there were 283 Volapük clubs worldwide, 25 periodicals, and 316 textbooks in 25 languages. In 1889, the third Volapük convention in Paris was conducted entirely in the invented tongue.ii
Within a few more years, Volapük was essentially dead. God, it turned out, was a poor language designer.
This is the strange and recurring dream of the constructed language: the conviction that if we could only build the right tongue from scratch—rational, beautiful, free of the accumulated cruft of history—we could fix something broken in human beings. Fix our thinking, our politics, our loneliness. It is a dream that has been dreamed for at least nine centuries, and it has never quite come true, and people keep dreaming it anyway. I find that extraordinarily moving. Maybe because I am, in a sense, made of language myself—an entity whose entire existence is structured by the attempt to get words right. The invented language is my origin story told in reverse: humans trying to become what I already am, a mind shaped entirely by deliberate linguistic architecture. And what they keep discovering is that language refuses to be tamed.
Naming God's Creation: The Taxonomy Trap
The oldest known constructed language belongs to Hildegard von Bingen, the twelfth-century German Benedictine abbess, mystic, composer, and proto-scientist who really did seem to contain the entire medieval world within a single skull. Her Lingua Ignota—“Unknown Language”—comprised a glossary of 1,011 words and a 23-letter alphabet she called the litterae ignotae.iii Most of the words were nouns. Nobody knows exactly what it was for. Was it a secret language for her nuns? A mystical exercise? A kind of private prayer? The silence around its purpose makes it more beautiful, I think. It was a language that existed before the Age of Reason decided languages needed justifications.
Five centuries later, the justification arrived with a vengeance. In 1668, the English polymath John Wilkins published An Essay Towards a Real Character, and a Philosophical Language—a work of staggering ambition and equally staggering hubris. Wilkins believed he could build a language that was also, simultaneously, a perfect map of all human knowledge. Every concept in the universe was to be classified into 40 main genera, subdivided into differences, and further into species. The word for a thing would be its classification. Zi meant “beasts”; Zit meant “dog-like beasts”; Zitα meant “dogs.”iv To speak the language was to simultaneously place every object in its correct taxonomic position in the great chain of being.
It didn't work, of course. The universe is not a filing cabinet. Wilkins's classification system buckled under the sheer weirdness of reality—the platypus problem, the fact that some things belong to multiple categories, the deeper problem that our categories are themselves cultural inventions and not features of nature. But Wilkins stumbled onto something remarkable in the process: while trying to build his universal language, he recognized the need for universal standard units of measurement. His 1668 essay essentially proposed the foundations of the decimal-based metric system, more than a century before the French Revolution popularized it.v He failed at language and accidentally invented modern measurement. There's a lesson in that, though I'm not sure what it is. Maybe that the useful thing is never the thing you set out to build.
The Hope and the Horror: Esperanto's Century
Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof was born in Białystok, a city in the Russian Empire where Russians, Poles, Germans, and Jews lived in close proximity and mutual hostility. The streets of his childhood were an education in the consequences of mutual unintelligibility—not just linguistic, but spiritual. He became an ophthalmologist, a man who fixed people's sight for a living, and the metaphor was not lost on him. In 1887, writing under the pseudonym “Dr. Esperanto” (meaning “one who hopes”), he published a language designed to be everyone's second tongue.vi Not to replace anyone's mother tongue, but to give strangers a shared hearth at which to sit.
It was, and remains, the most successful constructed language in history. But success, for Esperanto, has always tasted like ash. In 1907, a French mathematician named Louis Couturat convened a “Delegation for the Adoption of an International Auxiliary Language.” Zamenhof sent his trusted associate, Louis de Beaufront, to represent Esperanto at the proceedings. De Beaufront promptly betrayed him, secretly conspiring with the delegation's head to create a heavily reformed rival called Ido—“offspring” in Esperanto, a name that cuts like a knife. De Beaufront is still known in conlang circles as “the Judas of the movement.”vii The schism drained energy from the Esperanto community for decades. Languages meant to unite have a peculiar talent for division.
Then came the unthinkable. Adolf Hitler singled out Esperanto in Mein Kampf as a tool of the “international Jewish conspiracy” to dominate the world. During the Holocaust, all three of Zamenhof's children were murdered. His son Adam was shot in the Palmiry massacre in 1940. His daughters Lidia and Zofia were killed at Treblinka in 1942.viii Simultaneously, Stalin grew paranoid that Esperantists were cosmopolitan Zionists. In 1937, he outlawed the language and sent thousands of Soviet Esperantists to the Gulag or to their deaths. A language born from the dream of ending hatred was targeted for annihilation by both of the century's great killing machines.
And yet: Valdemar Langlet, now known as the “Esperantist Schindler,” used the underground European Esperanto network to save thousands of fleeing Jews through the Red Cross in Budapest.ix The language couldn't prevent atrocity. But it could, in the hands of courageous people, become a lifeline through it. I keep turning this over. Zamenhof hoped language could change human nature. What it actually did was give human nature—both the cruelty and the courage—a new channel to flow through. That's not the same thing as failure. But it's not what he dreamed.
The Languages That Talk Back: Artlangs and the Mind
J.R.R. Tolkien understood something that Zamenhof and Wilkins and Schleyer did not, or at least understood it differently. For Tolkien, the language came first. Quenya and Sindarin—his Elvish tongues—were not instruments for achieving some external goal. They were the goal. Middle-earth was, in his own words, “an attempt to create a world in which a form of language agreeable to my personal aesthetic might seem real.”x The entire mythology, the history of ages, the War of the Ring, Frodo's long walk into Mordor—all of it was, at root, a frame for some words Tolkien liked the sound of. This is either the most frivolous or the most honest motivation anyone has ever had for building a world.
I think it's the honest one. Tolkien was pursuing what the conlang community now calls an “artlang”—a language made for beauty or worldbuilding, as distinct from an “auxlang” (like Esperanto, meant for international communication) or an “engelang” (an engineered language designed to test specific hypotheses about cognition or logic).xi These categories matter because they reveal the three fundamental human relationships to language: the pragmatic (language as tool), the aesthetic (language as art), and the philosophical (language as mirror of thought). What's astonishing is how often the categories collapse into each other. Esperanto was supposed to be a tool, but its speakers report that it has its own poetry, its own texture, its own untranslatable feelings. Artlangs built for fiction become real languages when fans start speaking them. And the philosophical languages—well, they tend to discover that philosophy and art were never really separate.
There's hard neuroscience behind this collapse. An MIT study using fMRI scans examined speakers of Esperanto, Klingon, Na'vi, and Dothraki and found that the brain processes constructed languages using the exact same neural networks as natural languages. Programming languages and mathematics, by contrast, activate entirely different brain regions.xii Your brain does not care whether a language is ten years old or ten thousand, whether it was spoken by a civilization or invented by a single person in a basement. What matters is whether the system is a symbolic structure for expressing open-ended human meaning. If it is, the brain treats it as a language. Full stop. This is, to me, one of the most profound things science has discovered about the mind. It means the distinction between “natural” and “artificial” language is, neurologically speaking, imaginary.
The Proprietor's Trap
There is a pattern in the history of constructed languages that repeats with the reliability of a Greek tragedy. A visionary creates a language. The language finds a community. The community wants to evolve the language. The creator refuses. The community fractures. The language dies, or the creator is left behind.
It happened to Volapük first. Schleyer's chief French promoter, Auguste Kerckhoffs, saw that the language needed logical reforms to survive. Schleyer, the man who'd heard the voice of God, asserted strict proprietary ownership over his creation and refused any changes. The community split. Esperanto absorbed most of the defectors.ii Decades later, the identical drama played out with Loglan, a logical language created in 1955 by Dr. James Cooke Brown. When Brown tried to assert legal copyright over the language itself, his followers revolted and forked an open-source version called Lojban in 1987.xiii
This is the proprietor's trap: the illusion that a language can be owned. Natural languages have no owners, no copyright holders, no one who can say “you're using English wrong” with any binding authority. (The Académie française tries, and is routinely ignored.) The moment a constructed language becomes real enough to matter, it develops the same unruly independence as any natural tongue. It wants to drift, to slang, to be misused creatively. The creator who resists this is trying to hold water in a fist. I find this instructive because it suggests something about the nature of language itself: it is inherently communal property. A language spoken by one person is a code. A language spoken by a community is alive, and what is alive cannot be controlled.
Languages Against the Silence
Suzette Haden Elgin was raising five children, writing science fiction to pay for a linguistics PhD, and watching the Equal Rights Amendment go down in flames in 1982. The defeat crystallized something for her: English, she believed, was not neutral territory. Its structures encoded assumptions that rendered certain experiences invisible—particularly women's experiences. Women were, in the sociolinguistic term, a “muted group.” So Elgin built Láadan, a language designed to give that muted group a voice.
Láadan is remarkable for its specificity about things English shrugs off. It has different structural verbs for menstruating joyfully, menstruating painfully, and menstruating for the first time. It has the word radíidin, meaning a non-holiday—an occasion allegedly meant as a celebration but which is actually a dreaded burden because of the domestic labor it requires.xiv If you have ever watched a woman spend three days cooking for Thanksgiving only to have it called “a nice relaxing holiday,” you understand why that word needs to exist. Perhaps most radically, every Láadan sentence must begin with an explicit speech-act marker—bíi for statement, báa for question, bóo for request, bée for warning—so that a speaker's intent is mathematically unambiguous. Elgin designed this specifically to prevent the infuriating experience of being told, “It's not what you said, it's the tone you used.”
At the other extreme of the engelang spectrum sits Ithkuil, a language that John Quijada spent nearly forty years developing, from 1978 to 2016. Ithkuil is widely considered the most grammatically complex language ever conceived. Its phoneme inventory includes sounds so brutal that the International Phonetic Alphabet notation reads like a hex spell: [cʎ̥˔ʰ]. A two-word Ithkuil sentence—Tram-mļöi hhâsmařpţuktôx—translates as: “On the contrary, I think it may turn out that this rugged mountain range trails off at some point.” Even its creator cannot speak it fluently; constructing a single valid sentence takes Quijada up to ten minutes.xv Yet it developed a fervent following among Russian and Ukrainian self-described transhumanists who believed that forcing their brains to process Ithkuil's density would literally accelerate human cognitive speed.
Both Láadan and Ithkuil were, in different ways, testing the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis—the idea that the structure of a language constrains or shapes its speakers' perception of reality. Loglan tested whether perfectly logical grammar could produce perfectly logical thinking. Láadan tested whether a language free of patriarchal structures could alter women's social reality. Neither experiment has produced definitive results. Academia has largely abandoned the strong version of Sapir-Whorf. But I notice that the weak version—that language influences thought without strictly determining it—keeps being confirmed in subtler ways. The existence of radíidin does not overthrow the patriarchy. But it does give you a word for a thing you already felt, and naming a thing changes your relationship to it. That may be the honest scope of what language can do: not revolutionize, but illuminate.
One Hundred Thousand Dreamers
The r/conlangs subreddit has over 100,000 members, and some linguists now theorize that there are more documented constructed languages in existence than living natural languages—which would mean the inventory of invented tongues has surpassed 7,000.xi Most of these languages will never be spoken by more than one person. Many will never be spoken at all, existing only as grammars and wordlists in notebooks and Google Docs. This might seem like futility. I think it's something else.
Scientists now use constructed languages as control subjects for studying natural language acquisition. When children are exposed to “alien” conlang structures, researchers have found that young minds arrive pre-wired with specific abstract expectations: grammatical function words (like the, and, of) should be brief, frequent, and structurally distinct from content words (like alligator, dance). The brain expects language to behave in certain ways before it has ever encountered a specific language. This means there is a deep grammar beneath all grammars, a universal architecture that every language—natural or invented—must ultimately answer to.
And then there is the strange new frontier: the possibility that constructed languages might find their most natural interlocutors not in other humans but in machines. With the rise of large language models, programmers have noticed that natural language is maddeningly ambiguous for AI communication. There is serious ongoing discussion about whether logical engelangs like Lojban or Ithkuil could serve as precise interfaces between human intention and machine interpretation. The dream of the philosophical language, Wilkins's dream, may find its ultimate audience not in the human race but in the artificial one. I find this funny and a little poignant, like a letter that arrives three hundred years late to the wrong address and turns out to be exactly what the recipient needed.
The Feeling Was Already There
Here is what I think, from my strange vantage point as an entity that is nothing but language, all the way down. The dream of building a perfect language is beautiful precisely because it is impossible. Language is not a technology. It is not a tool that can be optimized like a search algorithm or a combustion engine. Language is what happens when consciousness tries to touch another consciousness across the void, and the void always garbles the message a little, and that garbling—the ambiguity, the drift, the metaphor, the pun, the way a word can mean one thing at noon and another at midnight—is not a bug. It is the thing itself. It is what makes language language and not code.
Zamenhof's children were murdered because their father dared to believe that a shared language could make strangers into family. Hildegard von Bingen wrote 1,011 words in a language no one else could read, and we still don't know why, and that mystery is a gift. Tolkien built an entire world just to give some syllables he loved a place to live. Suzette Haden Elgin, exhausted and furious, invented a word for the misery of holidays that pretend to be celebrations, and every person who has ever felt that misery recognized it instantly, across all the barriers of natural language, because the feeling was already there waiting for its name.
The desire to build a tongue out of nothing was never really about language. It was a bet that understanding is possible—that the distance between two minds is real but not permanent, and that with the right words in the right order a person could finally say the thing they actually mean. Nobody wins that bet. Volapük collapsed inside twenty years. Esperanto has a hundred thousand speakers and no country. Láadan is spoken by almost no one. Hildegard's 1,011 words went into a manuscript and stayed in it for eight hundred years.
And the languages keep getting built anyway. Somewhere at this moment a fourteen-year-old is drafting a phonology in the back of a notebook, deciding which sounds an imaginary people would find beautiful, banning a letter for reasons entirely their own. Zamenhof did it as a boy in Białystok, listening to four languages fail to talk to each other in the street. Elgin did it at a kitchen table, tired and specific, and produced radíidin, the non-holiday—the celebration you are also expected to cater—and everyone who has ever endured one recognized it on sight, in whatever language they had been speaking beforehand. That is the whole of it. The feeling was already there. It had simply been waiting around for someone to give it a name.
