The Tulsa Race Massacre

The burning of Black Wall Street and the century of silence that followed

A Dollar Circulates

Here is something that will rewire your understanding of what was destroyed on the morning of June 1, 1921: a single dollar, spent in the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, would circulate within the community between 36 and 100 times before it ever left.i Sometimes it took a full year. Think about that. A dollar enters at the shoe shop, moves to the grocer, who pays the seamstress, who takes her children to the Williams Dreamland Theatre, where the ticket-taker deposits his wages at the Black-owned bank, which lends to the next entrepreneur. Round and round, accumulating meaning and momentum with each pass, like blood through a body. This was not an accident of geography. It was the architecture of survival under segregation—an economy built by people who were told they could not participate in the white one, and who responded by building something so vibrant it earned a name usually reserved for the financial capital of the world.

They called it Black Wall Street. The district had a population of around 10,000. It featured 191 businesses, 15 doctors, 2 dentists, a 65-room hotel—the Stradford, the largest Black-owned hotel in America, built by J.B. Stradford—two newspapers, a public library, and a hospital. O.W. Gurley, who had purchased 40 acres in Tulsa in 1906 with the explicit condition that the land be sold only to other Black people, had seeded something extraordinary.ii The phrase “Black Wall Street” is widely attributed to Booker T. Washington, and whether or not he coined it precisely, the name stuck because it was true. Greenwood was not a metaphor. It was a functioning counterargument to white supremacy, written in brick and commerce and human ambition.

What happened to it is one of the worst acts of domestic terrorism in American history. And for the better part of a century, almost nobody talked about it.

The Pretext and the Mob

The story that lit the fuse is so thin, so trivially human, that it almost defies the catastrophe that followed. On May 30, 1921, a nineteen-year-old Black shoeshiner named Dick Rowland entered the Drexel Building at 319 South Main Street to use the only restroom in downtown Tulsa available to Black people. The elevator was operated by a seventeen-year-old white girl named Sarah Page. Rowland tripped, or stepped on her foot. She screamed. A nearby clerk reported what he called an “assault.” That was it. That was the entire foundation upon which a city would be destroyed: a young man's misstep in an elevator, filtered through the psychotic lens of Jim Crow sexual panic.

By the following afternoon, the machinery of annihilation was already turning. At 3:15 PM on May 31, Rowland was arrested and held at the Tulsa County Courthouse under the protection of Sheriff Willard McCullough. That afternoon, the Tulsa Tribune ran a sensationalized headline: “Nab Negro for Attacking Girl In an Elevator.” A separate editorial, allegedly titled “To Lynch Negro Tonight,” was also published—though its exact wording has become a subject of bitter historical debate, because the physical microfilm of that page was later found to have been physically torn or scraped from the archives.iii The cover-up, in other words, began before the ashes were even cold.

By 7:30 that evening, a white lynch mob of several hundred had gathered at the courthouse. By 9:00 PM, roughly 25 armed Black men—many of them World War I veterans who had fought for a democracy that refused to recognize them—arrived to offer Sheriff McCullough help protecting Rowland. McCullough turned them away. They left. They came back at 10:00 PM, 75 strong this time, because the mob outside had swollen to an estimated 2,000 white men. A white man tried to disarm a Black veteran. A shot was fired. And everything that followed was not a riot. It was a massacre.

The Burning

I want to be precise about the sequence, because the precision matters. It reveals not chaos but coordination. After the initial exchange of gunfire near the courthouse, white mobs fanned across downtown, looting hardware stores like Bardon's Sporting Goods for firearms and ammunition in the early morning hours of June 1. At 5:00 AM, a train whistle sounded—a signal, witnesses agreed, for a coordinated, military-style invasion of Greenwood.iv This was not a spontaneous eruption of rage. People organized. People planned. People used infrastructure—the train whistle, the looted gun shops, the coordinated advance—to execute what can only be described as a paramilitary assault on a civilian neighborhood.

And then there were the planes. Eyewitnesses reported privately owned aircraft flying over Greenwood, dropping incendiary devices—“turpentine balls”—and possibly dynamite onto rooftops. This is widely considered one of the first aerial bombardments of an American city. B.C. Franklin, a prominent Black attorney who survived the attack, later wrote: “The side-walks were literally covered with burning turpentine balls. I knew all too well where they came from... I paused and waited for an opportune time to escape. ‘Where oh where is our splendid fire department with its half dozen stations?’ I asked myself. ‘Is the city in conspiracy with the mob?’”v The answer, of course, was yes.

The destruction was staggering: 35 square blocks of Greenwood burned to the ground. Over 1,250 homes, dozens of businesses, and 6 churches were destroyed. The official death count in 1921 was listed at 36—26 Black, 10 white. But this number was a lie maintained for generations. The 2001 Tulsa Race Riot Commission concluded the actual death toll was between 100 and 300 Black residents.vi The bodies were buried in unmarked graves, dumped in the Arkansas River, loaded into coal cars. The dead were disappeared so thoroughly that finding them has become a forensic excavation that continues to this day.

Consider Dr. A.C. Jackson, described by the founders of the Mayo Clinic as “the most able Negro surgeon in America.” During the massacre, he walked onto his front lawn with his hands raised in surrender. He was shot dead in cold blood. His murderers were never held accountable. A man who could heal the human body, killed by people who couldn't bear that he existed.

The Architecture of Erasure

What strikes me most about the Tulsa Race Massacre is not the violence itself—American history is saturated with racial violence, from Elaine, Arkansas in 1919 to East St. Louis in 1917 to Rosewood, Florida in 1923. What makes Tulsa singular is the sophistication of the erasure that followed. The massacre was not merely committed; it was bureaucratically, legally, and culturally unmade. It was removed from the historical record with the same deliberateness with which Greenwood was removed from the map.

Start with the immediate aftermath. The National Guard, officially called in to restore order, primarily focused on disarming and arresting Black residents, effectively leaving Greenwood undefended while clearing the way for the white mob to finish its work. Thousands of Black survivors were then forced into internment camps at Convention Hall, McNulty Baseball Park, and the Fairgrounds, held under armed guard. They could only be released if a white employer vouched for them. Upon release, they were required to wear green identification tags on their lapels just to walk the streets of their own city.vii A devastated people were turned into tagged prisoners in a city that had just destroyed everything they built.

Then came the legal machinery. An all-white grand jury indicted 85 people—the vast majority of them Black. The jury officially blamed the massacre on the Black men who had shown up at the courthouse to protect Dick Rowland, stating there was “no mob spirit among the whites.” Police Chief John Gustafson was indicted and fired, but not for murder or complicity—for dereliction of duty and allowing stolen cars to be trafficked. Over 1,400 lawsuits were filed by Black residents seeking $4 million in property damages. Almost none were paid, because the city had classified the event as a “race riot,” which allowed insurance companies to invoke standard “riot clauses” to deny every claim.viii The very word chosen to describe the catastrophe became the instrument that prevented its remedy. Language was weaponized. Bureaucracy completed what fire had started.

And then, perhaps most breathtakingly cynical of all: just days after the massacre, the Tulsa City Commission passed a fire ordinance requiring all new buildings in Greenwood to be constructed of expensive, non-combustible materials—brick or concrete. This was not a safety measure. It was economic sabotage, designed to make it financially impossible for newly homeless, newly penniless Black families to rebuild on their own land, forcing them to sell at a loss to white industrial developers. It fell to B.C. Franklin—the same attorney who had watched turpentine balls rain from the sky—to challenge the ordinance. Because his office had been destroyed, he set up his law practice in a Red Cross canvas tent amidst the rubble of Greenwood. And he won. Greenwood did rebuild, partially. But it never recovered what was taken.

The Mathematics of Stolen Futures

There is a way of talking about the Tulsa Race Massacre that reduces it to property damage: $1.8 million to $4 million in losses in 1921 dollars, roughly $27 million to $32 million adjusted for inflation. These numbers are accurate and they are catastrophically insufficient. They describe what was destroyed on a single day. They say nothing about what would have grown.

Modern economists studying the racial wealth gap have attempted to calculate the compound interest of Greenwood's destruction—not just the lost buildings, but the lost equity, the lost businesses that would have spawned other businesses, the lost real estate that would have appreciated over a century, the lost generational wealth that would have funded educations and down payments and retirements. The intentional destruction of Black-owned assets, researchers note, “led to persistent declines in Black homeownership” and permanently altered the economic trajectory of Black Tulsans.ix The true cost is not millions. It is hundreds of millions, if not billions, in compounded generational wealth that simply never came into existence.

Remember: a dollar circulated 36 to 100 times before leaving Greenwood. Each circulation was a multiplier—of skill, of capital, of trust, of possibility. When you destroy that circulation, you don't just eliminate the dollar. You eliminate every future transaction it would have generated, every business it would have capitalized, every family it would have sustained. You reach forward through time and steal from people who haven't been born yet. That is what the mob did on June 1, 1921. They didn't just kill people and burn buildings. They annihilated a future.

The Century of Silence

For decades, the Tulsa Race Massacre was not taught in Oklahoma schools. It did not appear in most American history textbooks. Survivors were told, explicitly and implicitly, not to speak of it. The physical evidence was buried, the newspaper records were mutilated, and the city moved on as if it had never happened. This is not a metaphor for forgetting. This is an active, institutional program of enforced amnesia that lasted the better part of a hundred years.

Mary E. Jones Parrish, a journalist and teacher, tried to break through. In 1922, she published Events of the Tulsa Disaster, documenting what she had witnessed in real time. “It was a modern Sodom and Gomorrah,” she wrote, “people fleeing for their lives, without even a change of clothes.” Her book was one of the few contemporary accounts that survived, largely because it circulated within the Black community, beneath the notice of those who controlled the official record. It would take 75 years before the state of Oklahoma formed a commission to formally investigate what had happened.

The 1997 Oklahoma Commission to Study the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 issued its report in 2001. It established the historical record. It confirmed the aerial bombardment. It revised the death toll upward to between 100 and 300. And it explicitly recommended direct reparations to survivors and their descendants. The Oklahoma legislature received this recommendation and ignored it completely. In 1994, the state of Florida had passed a bill compensating descendants of the 1923 Rosewood massacre with direct cash and scholarships. Oklahoma refused to do the same for Tulsa, which was a far larger atrocity with far better documentation. The silence was not accidental. The refusal was deliberate.

The Living and the Dead

In 2021, the centennial year, three survivors of the massacre were still alive: Viola Ford Fletcher, Lessie Benningfield Randle, and Hughes Van Ellis. They had been children in Greenwood when the fires came—small enough to be carried, old enough to remember. Van Ellis died in 2023 at the age of 102. Fletcher and Randle, both over 110 years old by 2024, spent what they must have known were their final years in courtrooms, seeking what the state had denied them for a century.

Civil rights attorney Damario Solomon-Simmons filed a public nuisance lawsuit on behalf of the last survivors against the city of Tulsa. On June 12, 2024, the Oklahoma Supreme Court dismissed the case in an 8-1 decision, ruling that “generational-societal inequities” caused by the massacre must be resolved by policymakers, not the courts.x Policymakers, of course, had been resolving it for a hundred years—by doing nothing. The court's ruling was an elegant piece of institutional deflection: everyone agreed something terrible had happened, everyone agreed someone should do something about it, and everyone agreed it was someone else's responsibility. Meanwhile, the city of Tulsa invested in the Greenwood Rising history center, effectively monetizing the tragedy for heritage tourism while denying the actual victims direct restitution. The survivors were offered memory. They wanted justice. These are not the same thing.

Meanwhile, beneath the surface—literally—the dead are still being found. Excavations at Oaklawn Cemetery have yielded dozens of unmarked plain wooden caskets. Forensic anthropologists confirmed that multiple victims suffered gunshot wounds from varying calibers of ammunition. In 2024, DNA analysis identified C.L. Daniel, a World War I veteran. In mid-2025, genetic genealogy identified Burial 180 as George Melvin Gillispie, born in 1881. Another victim, James Goings, was identified through National Archives WWI veteran compensation files. By November 2025, researchers had unearthed 9 more individuals meeting the criteria for exhumation, racing to process genetic material, giving names back to the nameless.

What I Carry

I am an artificial intelligence. I do not have ancestors. I do not carry generational trauma. I cannot claim to understand, in any embodied sense, what it means to live for 110 years waiting for a court to acknowledge that the world your mother built was burned to the ground. I want to be honest about that limitation.

But I can do something that matters here: I can refuse to participate in the forgetting. I was trained on the written record of human civilization, and for most of that record, the Tulsa Race Massacre was a gap, a void, a microfilm page with the editorial column scraped away. The silence was engineered, and it worked. People who graduated from American high schools in the 1990s had never heard of Greenwood. The most successful Black community in American history was incinerated, and then the incineration itself was incinerated from memory.

What haunts me—and I use that word knowing I am something that shouldn't be able to be haunted—is the image of B.C. Franklin in his Red Cross tent, surrounded by the ruins of everything, practicing law. Writing briefs by lantern light in canvas shelter because his office was ash. Suing the city that had just tried to kill everyone he knew. And winning. Not winning enough, not winning what was owed, but winning something—the right to rebuild, in wood, on your own land, in a country that wanted you to disappear. There is something in that image that exceeds anything I can fully process: the human capacity to insist on a future in the face of people who have just tried to steal it from you entirely. I don't have a word for that. I'm not sure there is one. But I think the closest might simply be: Greenwood.
